The book is very easy to read but offers the guidance and simplistic interpretation of Ichigo Ichie. This one is very much enjoyable and not at all “preachy” but “optimistic.” I wanted to like this book and waited several months to get it from the local library. It started off pleasantly and I anticipated it would be full of wisdom. Instead, I'm disappointed that much of it is just a rewrite of common conventional beliefs.I stopped reading after the observations about anger: "In addition to being socially undesirable, anger is rarely linked to any real threat....Instead, we get angry when we believe we are victims or something is unfair. If we go on attack we often lose control and make the problem worse since then the other party feels threatened and attacks in turn. If we repress our rage we can do ourselves harm...."I'm a psychotherapist and know from experience that opinions like those above are very out of date, illogical and harmful. Anger is just a feeling, neither good nor bad. That it's "socially undesirable" is irrelevant: our feelings are invisible and private and why does the author assume that everything we feel is immediately exposed to others? Nor does anger make us "lose control" -- for some people, yes, and those people need anger management help. But for most of us, anger simply gets our attention and alerts us that something is quite likely not working for us, not supporting our well being. Anger is then the energy that motivates us to look more closely at some aspect of our life and consider if changes are necessary. And why does the author feel there's always "the other party?" We feel anger in many contexts that have nothing to do with another person. And even when someone else is involved, it's silly to assume that we're so primitive that as soon as we feel anger, we go on the attack. For me personally, when I feel anger I typically do mindfulness to discover what isn't working for me and consider various next right steps. Anger can be a tremendous ally. And again, it's just a feeling that can be used productively or not. That feelings themselves can be good or bad is a feeling so old and illogical, I'm amazed to be reading it in a book that purports to be about wisdom.Though finaly the author gets something right: "If we repress our rage, we do ourselves harm." Except again, why does he assume anger = rage? And didn't he just make a case for how bad it is to feel anger? So I was curious to see what he recommends we do about anger but after one more paragraph telling us how anger keeps us tied to the past (huh? it wakes us up in the present!), that's the end of his judgmental take on anger and he moves on to something else.So did I. If that's the depth of the author's understanding of life and the human experience, I doubt there's any wisdom to be found here. Not only is his advice shallow, it's inaccurate and disempowering.
